Zoo Day

Last full day of the school year will be spent at Lincoln Park Zoo.

We’ve checked out the map and have an idea of what animals will be there.

We’re most excited to hunt for animals we’ve written about.

With only 13 kids going, I’m really hoping all 10 of my chaperones show up so I don’t have to have a group. That would be the best end of the year gift of all.

Can we spread out the crazy?

The last week of school is often filled with last minute stuff as well as big end of the year shindigs.

Monday was Field Day. Jump houses, relay races, popsicles.

Tuesday. Absolutely nothing.

Today was Picnic Day. Jump houses, DJ, snow cones, popsicles, popcorn, hot dogs, chips, juices.

Tomorrow. Absolutely nothing.

Why do we have to do a bunch of stuff all on the same day? With two days having nothing, couldn’t we have moved some of the snacks around? Why did my kids need chips, juice, a popsicle, a snowcone and popcorn all in a two hour span? Completely unnecessary.

Just a couple more days to go..

Daisy can still be a pretty reluctant writer. She has a long way to go with her self confidence. She’s become much more comfortable with a blank page though so that’s been great to see.

She loves High School Musical and is often quoting that “Summer.. Summer..” bit the kids do when they stare at the clock. I think it’s in the second movie.

When she was stuck for an idea, I pitched “How about the things you do in summer, summer, summer?” It got a giggle and a nod and off she went. For some reason, she loves using the months in her writing. Fine with me. Love a kid who can use the room to write.

“April we’ll go to the park.”

“June we’ll go to the beach.”

“Summer.”

Sounds like a plan.

Immanuel came in December knowing Oo, Xx. He’s come a really long way. He’s a lovely [but conceited] artist. He chose to write about kangaroos which a nice change of pace from the usual cat, skunk or fox.

“A kangaroo jumped by a ball.” He always has random p’s in his writing because he does this weird thing where he’ll often go “/p/” at the end of chopping. I’ll let his first grade teacher worry about that.

“Can a kangaroo go to the beach?”

“Can a kangaroo swim?”

“Can a kangaroo go up into outer space?”

I also remember, “A kangaroo can go into its mom’s pouch.”

More cars/monster trucks. This time from Noah. He wanted to write about going to a race. He watches NASCAR at home and often talks about what it would be like to sit at a track.

“The race cars will win the race.” Um, spoiler alert?

“There is the race car that is red.” He also made a purple one because he knows it’s my favorite color.

“Me and my family.” He told me he is 7 in the picture because he has never been there yet so it will be in the future when he’s older. Good logic. He still hasn’t found out how old dad is. I bet dad wishes he was a long legged 16 year old..

“There is a monster truck.”

Jorge was absent Monday when we made our list. I always do a brainstorm list when they write independently just so I don’t have kids saying they don’t know what to write about.

When we started writing yesterday, I reread the list and asked if anyone who had been absent had anything they wanted to add. Jorge thought for a minute then said, “The most greatest idea is missing. Fluffy pillowpets!” And so it was written.

“Fluffy pillowpet. Fluffy pillowpets two. Boys were laid down on their pillowpets!”
